Abstrakt: The present text deals with the application of Rodney Stark’s model „Why religious groups succeed or fail“ on the Baha’ism (Baha’i faith) in the USA. Baha’ism is a relatively young and ambitious religious movement originally from Iran whose goal is to spread to all countries in the world and to establish a so co-called „world Bahá’i civilization.“ The central role was assigned to the United States of America, where is located the biggest western Baha’i community. Based on Stark’s model, we can say that the Baha’ism (it meets only two criteria of ten) is an unsuccessful religious movement, which is consistent with a low number of adherents according to the US censuses.

Studie byla původně uvedena jako výstup za minulý rok. Časopis však poté, co má studie byla přijata a prošla recenzním řízením, ukončil činnost a v uvedeném časopise tak nevyšla. Na místo toho byla zaslána redakci Theologické revue.

Abstract: Baháʾi faith is usually described as one of fastest growing religions in the world. In following article I am comparing numbers of Bahaʾi adherents given by official Baha’i statistics and by Association of Religious Data Archives (the Arda) with numbers from latest censuses. I am arguing that worldwide is less than 700 thousands active Baháʾist which is in conflict with numbers given by Arda and by Baha’i statistic (from six to seven millions of adherents). I am not trying to prove that data provided by Baháʾis are false or inflated but I am arguing that this data reflects good missionary results. However since Bahaʾi faith lacks conversion rituals and collective rituals which would strength religious identity, I am arguing that Baháʾi faith isn’t able to turn new converts into stable adherents.

Abstrakt: Present text deals with application of Rodney Stark’s model „Why religious groups succeed or fail“ on Babism (babi faith). Babism is a post-islamic religion which has roots in 19th century Iran and whose charismatic founder Bab proclaimed radical break from Islam. Although Babism has rapidly spread across Iran and Iraq and quickly gained almost one hundred thousands adherents, today it has roughly three thousand adherents. In current study I am using Stark’s model to explain it's fast success in gaining adherents and arguing it can be regarded as a succeesful movement, eventhough it does not meet Stark’s basic criterion of success which is attracting at least one hundred thousand believers and lasting for as long as a century. I am arguing that this is the result of anachronic view of separation of baha’ism (which has it’s origin in babism) from babism which artificially leads to a decrease in the number of babi believers in 19th century but which does not correspond with historical reality.

V textu se zabývám interpretací křesťanství a Ježíše v bahá’ismu a bábismu. Věnuji se především proměnám tolerance k jiným náboženstvím, jež jsou patrné na bahá’istické interpretaci Bible, především pak Nového zákona.
