SP characteristics

Master study programme in Botany offers a continuation in education for graduates in biological bachelor study programmes. Botany, as a field of study, has a long tradition at the Charles University and belongs to a group of evolutionary and ecological oriented disciplines. The programme provides education in systematics, diversity, evolution, and ecology of vascular and non-vascular plants, algae, fungi and related organisms. The study comprises both theoretical and practical education by means of lectures, seminars, field excursions, and laboratory courses which provide training for research and applied practice. The graduates elaborate diploma thesis in the fields of systematics, evolution, and ecology of plant species and their populations, and vegetation and landscape ecology in present and historical perspectives. The programme offers training in five specialities, namely Algology and algal ecology, Bryology and lichenology, Mycology, Plant ecology, and Vascular plants.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates in Botany have ample knowledge about evolution and biology of organisms which include vascular and non-vascular plants, algae, fungi and related organisms. They have acquired theoretical and practical education relevant for a particular group of organisms to comprehend evolutionary, ecological, geographical, and phytosociological relationships among them. The graduates have skills to determine organisms in the field or in the laboratory and have been trained in experimental methods, laboratory techniques, and evaluation procedures. These skills allow them to study and analyse problems relevant for the particular groups of organisms, summarize results, and present them in an appropriate way. The graduates can continue in doctoral studies towards a scientific career or find employment in research and applied practices, which involves academic institutions, nature conservancy, landscape ecology and landscape management, forestry, agriculture, clinical, biotechnological, and pharmaceutical applications.
