SP characteristics

The Genetics, molecular biology and virology study programme follows on from bachelor programmes in Molecular biology and biochemistry of organisms and Biology. Students' knowledge of molecular biology, genetics , virology and gene manipulations, as well as in fluorescent microscopy and, more recently, bioinformatics is developed by means of lectures and practical courses.
Due to the wide range of specialized courses on offer, as well as the gradually increasing variability of diploma project subjects, the SP is composed of three specializations covering different model organisms, the principle molecular and cellular features of which are studied: Virology, Molecular biology and genetics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, Molecular biology and genetics of eukaryotes).
This SP provides student with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in molecular biology, genetics and virology. These fields have developed rapidly over the last few decades and have found various applications in both basic and applied research. Molecular biology methods are used in both diagnostics and therapy, as well as in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Graduates of this SP are well qualified to meet the growing demand for qualified specialists.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduates have high level knowledge in molecular biology and genetics. With respect to their specialization they are experienced, not only in basic methods of molecular biology, but also in different advanced techniques including OMICs, fluorescent microscopy and cytogenetic approaches. They can design short-term research projects, select an optimal approach to their research question and critically evaluate experimental results. The graduates can be employed in both basic and applied research as well as in biomedicine or in the industrial sector.
