SP characteristics

The study programme in Asian Studies provides comprehensive education of experts in Asian studies drawing on the critical academic tradition. Unique in the context of Czech higher education, the programme continues to offer specializations that are offered by no other Czech universities. Emphasis is placed on active language skills of an Asian region of the students’ own choice, knowledge of the cultural and historical context and the theoretical background drawing on humanities.

Graduate profile for the public:
Indology: Graduates have had intensive training in the language of their specialisation, including comprehension, oral and writing skills, and have learnt the basics of a second Indian language. They have a grounding in Indian literature, history, religious traditions, society and culture. Graduates can pursue higher academic degrees or apply their knowledge and skills in a wide range of professional areas. They are qualified to work in state administration, cultural institutions, or business. Their methodological and language skills and the knowledge of the cultural-historical context can be applied when analysing a wide range of social issues and researching and processing data related to South Asia.

Vietnamese Studies: Graduates are conversant with research theory and methodology in their area of interest, and have speaking and writing skills in modern Vietnamese. They have a grounding in Vietnamese history, literature, and society, including issues related to the Vietnamese diaspora, in the cultural and historical context of the region. They are acquainted with the principles of critical academic work and are able to independently acquire, process and communicate information from Asia, especially South East Asia. Graduates can seek careers in culture, education, social work, media, state administration and commerce; alternatively, they are prepared to continue with tertiary education in a diversity of postgraduate programmes at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts.

Indonesian Studies: Graduates have solid writing and speaking skills in the modern standard Indonesian language, and skills in community interpreting. They have a deep understanding of the language structure and its use in the everyday life of various social groups. Furthermore, they have a grounding in Indonesian literature, history and culture that they can place into a broader cultural-historical context of the region. Their methodological competence enables them to analyse contemporary social phenomena related to local societies, and to use this knowledge when establishing business or cultural contacts. They are able to explore ethnic problems at applied level, using field research in contact professions.

Korean Studies: Graduates have everyday language skills in Korean and are able to read simple literary and technical texts in Korean. They have a solid grounding in Korean history, literature and society in the basic cultural and historical context of the region. They are familiar with Korean culture, religion and their development. Furthermore, they are acquainted with the principles of critical academic work with primary and secondary sources. They can seek careers as interpreters, in the media, culture, education, social work, state administration and commerce.

Tibetan Studies: Graduates are conversant with both literary and colloquial Tibetan and have an elementary knowledge of Sanskrit. They are capable of talking about common topics in the Lhasa dialect of Tibetan and translating easier texts written in literary Tibetan. Furthermore, graduates have a grounding in Tibetan religions, history and literature and are prepared for independent critical work with primary and secondary sources. Graduates are qualified for positions in state administration, humanitarian organizations, museums, and the media.

Japanese Studies: Graduates are qualified for independent work with the modern, standard Japanese language (both spoken and written); they have a general knowledge of Japanese history, Japanese literature and modern Japanese society, and are well prepared for using their language and communicative skills in a broad range of areas (politics, economy, culture, media, education). They can seek careers in language-related services, education, public administration, diplomacy, tourism, mass media and business.

Mongolian Studies: Graduates are conversant in colloquial Mongolian and have a basic knowledge of literary Mongolian. They have a grounding in the religion of Mongolian speaking regions and a basic knowledge of the literature and history of Mongolian speaking areas and other parts of Central Asia. They are prepared for independent critical work and qualified for positions in education, media, humanitarian aid and state administration. Having a basic grounding in the socio-cultural specificities of the region, graduates are also qualified for field work in the region.
