SP characteristics

The aim of the master study program Applied Geology is to educate professionals with general and specialized knowledge in the fields of geology and engineering. The focus of the program is the application of hydrogeological, engineering-geological and geophysical methods in solving practical and research tasks related to the geological environment. It is about searching for and using water resources, mineral resources and geothermal energy, exploration related to underground waste disposal or raw materials. Furthermore, applied geology methods are used to analyze environmental geological factors and to assess their risks, some of which are also related to global climate change. Typical tasks include landslides and other slope movements, floods, drinking water quality and quantity, radon risk, seismicity, etc.

Graduate profile for the public:
Applied Geology graduates will acquire a broad knowledge of geology and the necessary knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry and will be familiar with methods of field survey. According to specialization, their profile is oriented as follows.
Hydrogeology: basic knowledge in applied geology is deepened with a focus on hydrogeology, groundwater hydraulics, hydrochemistry and numerical modeling of groundwater flow.
Engineering geology: basic knowledge in applied geology is deepened with focus on engineering geology, soil and rock mechanics, foundation engineering and numerical modeling in soil mechanics.
Applied geophysics: basic knowledge in applied geology is deepened with focus on methods of applied geophysics with emphasis on the processing of measured data and their quantitative interpretation.
Graduates with scientific ambitions usually continue by doctoral studies in the same or related field and find employment in the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic or at home or foreign universities.
The graduates with professional orientation find employment in state institutions (TGM Water Research Institute of T.G.M., ČHMÚ, SÚRAO, etc.) and in a number of larger and smaller companies operating in water management, construction and mining fields (e.g. Vodní Zdroje, SUDOP, DIAMO, Dekonta, Aquatest, Inset, Povodí, MND). In the field of hydrogeology, graduates engage in exploration of groundwater and mineral water sources, optimization of their use and protection, or design and implementation of contaminated sites. In the field of engineering geology, they focus on exploration and monitoring work to secure demanding structures (tunnels, dams, highway and rail bodies, underground storage and repositories), foundation engineering, slope stability assessment and landslide remediation. In the field of applied geophysics, it is the design and implementation of geophysical exploration works for the search for inhomogeneities of the rock environment, geophysical exploration of the subsoil during foundations of buildings, searching for groundwater and mineral deposits, monitoring of radioactivity of rocks and seismicity.
