SP characteristics

The study program provides students with comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in the broad field of experimental plant biology in the areas of plant molecular and cellular biology, plant anatomy and developmental biology, plant physiology and plant ecological physiology. The study is aimed at detailed knowledge of the structure and life processes of plant cells and whole plants, their structure, function, metabolism, ontogenesis and interactions with the environment. Students acquire basic methodological approaches of experimental plant biology, such as physiological, molecular biological, microscopic, anatomical and morphological, biochemical, sometimes also biophysical or bioinformatic ones according to the focus of their diploma project. The interpretation of knowledge is primarily aimed at understanding the plant as a functional, internally coordinated entity that lives in a dynamic reciprocal interaction with the environment. The field “Experimental Plant Biology” has three specializations: plant physiology and anatomy, plant cell and molecular biology and plant ecophysiology.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate has a comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a wide range of experimental plant biology, which is focused on the study of the structure and life processes of plant cells and the entire plant, its structure, metabolism, ontogenesis, and interactions with the environment. At the same time, they have detailed knowledge in the specialization of experimental plant biology, to which they focused in their diploma project. They are familiar with modern methods, as well as with the basics of scientific work, critical thinking and evaluation. Graduates can continue their postgraduate studies and aim for scientific work in experimental biology of plants. They can be also employed in practically oriented fields such as agronomy, agrochemistry, horticulture, breeding, forestry, phytopathology, plant biotechnology, ecology and environmental protection. They can use their experience with microscopic, biochemical and molecular biological methods as well as general biological knowledge in other biological fields, also in state institutions and the commercial sector.
