SP characteristics

The master degree program is characterized by an emphasis on the necessary level of classical education, usually neglected by the new media studies. Therefore, in addition to the expected courses in visual rhetoric, sociology of new media or semiotics of advertising, there are also lectures on classical rhetoric, dialogueness as an essential cultural horizon, or issues related to the literary canon... Last but not least, attention is paid to a specifically conceived iconology as a mutual interconnectedness of the verbal and of the visual. The graduate gains a professional competence that allows him to interpret the actual media phenomena in a non-trivial way. However, the program helps to cultivate today's "media literacy" in a different way as well, from the point of view of the traditional rhetorical, philosophical, art–historical and literary positions. With the acquired cultural competence, to name just a few skills, graduates will be thus able to effectively and efficiently clarify the so far somehow fuzzy debate about "fake news" or discussions on a censorship of the internet…

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate profile reflects the competences and theoretical knowledge gained during the studies. The graduate is very well knowledgeable in the semiotic, narrative and rhetorical analysis of media messages and media communication. Thus, (s)he can identify and critically evaluate various social and media phenomena. (S)he is able to define, critically analyse and interpret the verbal and visual features of the media environment. As an expert, (s)he is able to enter the current discussions on the media literacy. (S)he is also competent to present the actual scientific research and knowledge in an erudite yet accessible language and is thus able to explicate it to a wider public and present it in the media. At the same time, (s)he is aware of the cultural and historical context of the actual (media, rhetorical or visual) phenomena that is often almost illegible. Due to the acquired theoretical, methodological and practical competencies, the graduates can apply in a wide range of disciplines that focus on the theoretical interpretation and reflection of the media messages, content and communication, as well as on their direct development within various organizations, agencies and further studies. With regard to their philological education and broad acquired skills in interpreting both visual and textual phenomena, the graduates can also find employment in various scientific institutes, cultural institutions or non-profit organizations. The training in understanding and managing the media allows the graduates to be employed in the field of audiovisual media themselves, including the advertising and PR agencies. In summary, the interconnected literary, media, art-historical, rhetorical and poetological training gives the graduates analytical skills that that are in their complexity unique in the Czech Republic.
