SP characteristics
The Ph.D. programme in the History of Czech Literature and Theory of Literature allows for each student’s individual growth based on his/her field of expertise and preferences within the discipline. Students develop a profound insight into the methods of literary scholarship in a more general context of the humanities; a special emphasis is placed on literary theory, text interpretation, text linguistics and the history of Czech literature in a comparative perspective. Study in the programme combines tasks and duties applying to all students with individual work on a dissertation thesis. Additionally, each student is assigned a portfolio of research and academic activities. Philological methods constitute the methodological basis of the interpretation process, while being equally important for literary history in relation to other methods in which the humanities and social sciences approach historical issues and the specific role that literary history occupies within cultural history. The philological basis of the methodology, a distinctive feature of the discipline, can be applied either to purely literary material or to the comparative analysis of literary texts in relation to other types of art, media and elements or features of culture that generate cultural meaning. The programme aims at producing educated, independent and creative experts ready to do research in the comparative analysis of distinct literatures and literary features against the background of the general contexts of culture, interdisciplinary approaches and specificities of a multicultural world.
