The programme revolves around the study of the languages of Asia and Africa using modern linguistic and philological approaches. The programme allows students to study individual languages or language groups in a manner embedded in modern linguistic theory, yet also one that respects the specificities of individual languages or language groups.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate has theoretical and practical knowledge in his/her field (linguistics and philology of a specific language or language family of Asia and Africa), a good overview of general linguistics and the ability to apply general objective judgement and critical thinking also in other related humanities disciplines. The graduate has been trained for independent scientific work in his/her discipline and may be employed in professions where the knowledge of the respective language, of general linguistics and of philological procedures is required. The graduate may also work in demanding areas of applied linguistics such as interpreting of technical lectures or technical translation of linguistic publications etc.
