SP characteristics
The Czech History doctoral degree programme is part of the History study programme. Czech history ranks among the traditional disciplines cultivated at Charles University. It prepares graduate students for research activities in the field of Czech history from the early Middle Ages to the 21st century. Czech history is understood as the history of the country and the lands belonging within the historically variable borders of the Czech state, and as the history of the country’s people, including the Czech, German and Jewish ethnicities. At the same time, Czech history is understood as an integral part of the history of Central European and, in some aspects and periods, European history as well as of the broader spatial context. Topics explored in the programme include, especially, Czech political, social and cultural history, while attention is also dedicated to the theoretical problems of history and study of Czech historical culture. Methodologically, a full range of theoretical and methodological concepts and research methods are applied in this field of study, from traditional forms of historical work to concepts of historical anthropology, cultural history and semiology. The objective of the degree programme is to prepare students for independent research work in the field of Czech history with an emphasis on broader scientific and, generally, cultural awareness and values. The doctoral degree programme in Czech history is offered by the Institute of Czech History at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, which closely cooperates with other institutes and departments of the Faculty and University, as well as with a number of components of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, other universities and other – especially historical – institutes.

Graduate profile for the public:
A graduate of the doctoral degree programme in Czech History has gained a comprehensive knowledge of historical events and processes in their broadest context with an emphasis on the interconnectedness of heuristic, documentary, theoretical, interpretive and argumentative work. The graduates work systematically and precisely, and are able to generalise and creatively apply theoretical and methodological inspirations. They conduct independent, creative scientific activities whose results are conveyed to the professional and non-academic public. Therefore, they are prepared to find employment at science-and-research and history institutes and universities, while also being qualified to perform highly demanding professional work in the state administration, in various civil society forums, all types of media, in the domain of culture etc.
