The aim of the doctoral study programme in Classical Archaeology is to train talented graduates of the master’s study programmes in classical archaeology and other related disciplines for international academic careers. Like at other leading European and non-European universities, Charles University’s independent programme in classical archaeology is one of the major pillars of knowledge and understanding of the roots of our European identity.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate from the doctoral programme in Classical Archaeology has an in-depth knowledge of the art and architectural monuments of classical antiquity, of field and museum techniques, a basic knowledge of classical languages and of two modern languages, the basics of epigraphy and classical numismatics, ancient history, the protohistory of Central Europe and of the classical tradition in Czech and European art. The bearer of a Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology is expected to become an independent scholar, able to assert himself/herself internationally as an archaeologist during expeditions and excavations, museum curator, academic scholar, expert working for institutions protecting cultural monuments or as specialised public service media editor.
