Information science is concerned with the process patterns of creation, processing, storage, transformation, distribution and reception of information in society. Principles and findings of information science are used in the fields of data, information and communication management in the government, public and private sector as well as memory institutions and other institutions providing information services. Information science spans a broad range of research topics, involving manuscript research, rare books and readers´ reception from the Middle Ages up to the present, as well as research questions related to communication of information in society, scientific information and research data, issues related to new media and research on social networks and collaborative information systems in global digital networks.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates of the Ph.D. programme have comprehensive knowledge of information science and are competent to develop and apply the most advanced scientific methods and procedures for the development of basic and applied research in the field. They are able to identify, analyse, evaluate and interpret findings based on contemporary knowledge of the subject and identify and formulate development trends in information and knowledge society, information policy, information behaviour and information technology.
