The programme responds to the need to educate highly qualified experts in the field of language teaching and language-education policy on both national and international levels. It focuses on pedagogically oriented applied linguistics (educational linguistics) across the whole range of its thematic breadth, i.e. on the issues of language acquisition, language teaching, language education in its broadest sense, language disorders and language-disorder therapy. The program is typically transdisciplinary, with strong philological and pedagogical-psychological foundations.

The typical graduate of this doctoral programme has a sound knowledge and understanding of pedagogically oriented applied linguistics (educational linguistics) in all its aspects and in the philology of the chosen specific language; is capable of independent creative scientific thought within this transdisciplinary, problem-oriented field of science; and is capable of applying acquired knowledge in the search for solutions to theoretical questions related to the field, and of designing and implementing rationally and theoretically grounded solutions to practical problems within language education and related areas.
