SP characteristics
The Jewish Studies PhD programme provides a framework for the study of Jewish history and of the cultures of the Jews. The programme takes into account both the social and political, as well as the religious and intellectual dimensions of Jewish culture. The programme is structured along interdisciplinary lines. In terms of methodology, it draws inspiration from the approaches of social and cultural history, literary criticism and the theory of religion. The programme places the emphasis on the study of the history of the Jews in diaspora, in particular in Europe and Northern America, on the study of literature written in Hebrew, Yiddish and other Jewish languages, as well as of literature reflecting on Jewish identity and Jewish historical experience. And important role is assigned to the study of Jewish religion and philosophy. The focal point of the programme is defined by the formative period of rabbinic Judaism, in the centre the programme’s attention is the examination of Jewish cultures from the High Middle Ages up until the present day, with a particular emphasis on Jewish history and culture in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cultures of the Jews in the diaspora are examined in their diversity; particular attention is paid to the study of the emergence and operation of Jewish religious, national and social movements.
