SP characteristics

The study programme in the History and Cultures of Asia trains specialists on a diversity of aspects related to the history and culture of Asia. Drawing upon the long tradition of Oriental Studies research at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts, the programme has a scope and orientation that make it unique among programmes at Czech universities. Covering the vast region of Asia (excluding the Middle East which has its own programme), the study encompasses history, religion, writings, fiction and oral tradition or other aspects of spiritual and material culture. The programme aims at training experts with critical thinking skills and an ability to consider contemporary Asia – an increasingly important global player – in diverse contexts and from an interdisciplinary or comparative perspective. The broadly conceived programme rests on working with sources in the relevant languages while taking into consideration the cultural and historical contexts.
