SP characteristics
The main objective of the study program English Language is research on English at all the fundamental levels, morphological, syntactic, lexico-semantic, and that of discourse, both in the synchronic and the diachronic dimension. The theoretical starting point is modern functional structuralism, deriving from the tenets of the Prague Linguistic Circle, and enriched by the contemporary theoretical trends characteristic of the present-day European and Anglo-American English linguistics. Its significant feature is the application of corpus linguistics methodology and electronic corpora (monolingual and parallel) in the study of linguistic phenomena for which corpora may provide useful research data. An integral part of the research is the use of a contrastive approach wherever contributing to the clarification of the linguistic features under study. Depending on the nature of the research topic, the goals of projects may be not only theoretical, but also of practical relevance.
In addition to the foundation areas of study which form the basis of the study program and of the doctoral students’ theoretical knowledge in English linguistics (starting with an introduction to methodology of the field and its development), the program also includes special courses necessary to the research of the elected English language topics. Related to the general theoretical-applied preparation (philosophy, practical language), the aim of the doctoral studies is to enhance the doctoral students’ capacity for independent and critical approaches towards specific linguistic topics in the English language, to increase their comprehensive knowledge of their field continuously and to have them refine mature and critical examination and use of sources and literature.
