The Internal Medicine program focuses on comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care in the whole range of the internal medicine. In particular, it focuses on highly specialized research in the fields of nephrology (kidney disease, kidney transplantation), cardiovascular medicine, intensive medicine (care of the critically ill patients), metabolic diseases, nutrition and diabetology, hepato-gastroenterology (diseases of the liver, digestive tract and pancreas), endocrinology (endocrine diseases), pneumology, hematology and rheumatology. In the first year of study, PhD students complete compulsory courses in the field of health informatics, medical statistics, computer technology and the basics of scientific work, including publishing activities. The main part of the study is solving a specific research task in the field of internal medicine, which is in accordance with the research focus of the students department. The research results are summarized in his/her dissertation. During the study, students actively presents their results both in the form of scientific articles in the relevant scientific journals and in the form of oral presentations at national and international professional meetings. In the case of full-time study, active participation in regular student scientific conferences is obligatory. During their studies, PhD students are obliged to complete a professional internship abroad.

The graduate of the doctoral program has a broad academic and medical education, he/she is theoretically well prepared for the profession, demonstrates the prerequisites for cooperation with other health care specialists and continuous professional growth, masters the methodology of scientific research and research procedures. The graduate demonstrates a deep and broad knowledge of the biomedical fundamentals of the field, has acquired a broad knowledge of the causes and nature of diseases and pathological conditions, has a deep and broad knowledge of problems and hypotheses related to the research plan solution and ability of their critical evaluation and synthesis of acquired knowledge. He/she is very well orientated in scientific literature including specialized computer databases. They can practically use the newly acquired knowledge in the field of etiology, diagnostics, prevention and treatment of diseases. Graduates of the doctoral study program acquire skills enabling them to work as independent researchers and contribute to teaching and educational programs of the respective institution. The graduate is able to work as an interdisciplinary team member with national and international researchers, can present and explain research results to specialists of other fields or to the public.
