SP characteristics

The Master's study program Journalism focuses on the broader context of media work, including the current development of media and media systems, theoretical concepts of journalism and ethical issues. Students will gain knowledge about the means of analyzing media messages. The study focuses on theoretical knowledge in the field as well as on the current development of journalistic practice. It also reflects changes in media ownership and the phenomena of civil journalism, participatory journalism or the role of social media in journalistic practice. A significant specificity of journalism teaching at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University is also the range of possibilities of practical training in the form of creative workshops. The faculty has its own Radio and Television Laboratory, a darkroom and technical equipment for the processing of graphic materials and prepress. Students are encouraged to critically evaluate journalistic production, at the same time they have the opportunity to try out methods of journalistic work in seminars, workshops and practice.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate of the Master's study program Journalism is able to objectively assess reality and analyze media production. The graduate is also able to control how editorial routines work and has knowledge about the functioning of media audiences. The graduate is able to distinguish serious media from non-serious media and knows the methodology of social sciences and various types of media analysis. The graduate understands current media systems and has knowledge of their economic conditionality. The graduate is familiar with the European party system, including the functioning of the EU, understands the specificities of political, cultural or sports journalism and, in accordance with new research, understands visual communication. In the chosen specialization graduate has a deeper knowledge of a certain area of ​​media production.
