SP characteristics

Doctoral studies include general topics aimed at acquiring the knowledge and skills required for scientific work and critical thinking, as well as specialized studies involving pathology with is a basic discipline in medicine. Pathology is one of the most extensive medical disciplines. As defined in the long-term strategy plan of our medical faculty, The Fingerland Department of Pathology, where PhD students undergo tuition, is focused mainly on research in the pathology of tumors and cardiovascular pathology. Therefore, most of the dissertation topics are from these areas. The qualitative improvement in pathology in recent years is mostly a result of wide implementation of modern methods - immunohistochemistry and molecular genetics. The study program covers also forensic medicine. The characteristic feature of pathology is broad interdisciplinary cooperation. The standard duration of PHD program is 4 years, the study is completed by the defense of the doctoral thesis, graduate is awarded the title "Ph.D.".

Graduate profile for the public:
A graduate of DSP Pathology is a highly qualified expert, prepared for further work at an academic-research position. During the studies, deep knowledge in the field of pathological anatomy or forensic medicine, respectively, is acquired. He also gains expertise in basic (cytology, histology) and modern methods (molecular genetics, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction). This knowledge is applied in the scientific work in the laboratory. He can independently and critically evaluate new findings in accordance with paradigm of evidence-based medicine, as well as propose a scientific experiment to solve well defined research hypotheses related to histopathology, cytopathology or forensic medicine, prepare a grant application for research support, manage a small team, interpret, discuss and present the results of scientific work. The graduate is able to understand the results in the broader context of biomedical research. He is also aware of the interdisciplinary and clinical context of the discipline.
