SP characteristics

Internal medicine is a fundamental clinical subject. It deals with prevention, diagnostics and therapy of internal diseases in adults. The study programme is focused on epidemiology of internal diseases, their aetiology and pathogenesis, pathology, pathological physiology, clinical features, methods of investigation, and complex therapy. Important part is also prognosis and quality of life of patients. Basic subjects of internal medicine are cardiology and urgent medicine, angiology, pneumology, gastroenterology, haematology, rheumatology, osteology, endocrinology, nephrology, metabolism, clinical nutrition, diabetology, clinical immunology and allergology, gerontology, clinical pharmacology, occupational diseases and sport medicine. Doctoral studies cover general subjects and skills required for scientific research work and mental capability of analytic and synthetic thinking. Standard length of study is 4 years, study is concluded by defending the thesis, absolvent is awarded the title „PhD“.

A graduate of DSP Internal Medicine is a highly qualified expert who is versatile for further work at an academia or research with a biomedical focus. S/he has a detailed knowledge of internal medicine and its subjects (cardiology and urgent medicine, angiology, pneumology, gastroenterology, haematology, rheumatology, osteology, endocrinology, nephrology, metabolism, clinical nutrition, diabetology, clinical immunology and allergology, gerontology, clinical pharmacology, occupational diseases and sport medicine). This knowledge is applied during research work in internal medicine (in laboratories, experiments and/or clinical medicine). S/he has acquired the skills and methodology used in biomedical research and is able to master laboratory, experimental and/or clinical methods necessary to work on the thesis so that it will bring original results. S/he can independently and critically evaluate new findings in accordance with evidence-based principles of medicine, propose a scientific experiment to solve scientific questions of a biomedical nature, prepare a grant application for research support, manage a small team, interpret, discuss and present results of the scientific work.
