SP characteristics

The undergraduate degree programme in Sociology provides an introduction in the fundamental theories, concepts and terms of classical and contemporary sociology. The programme aims at developing the command of social research methodology (both quantitative and qualitative), methods of data gathering, processing and analysis. The programme equips students with the capacity to explore social practices and social problems as well as with the ability to read critically scholarly literature, to discuss and present research findings. The undergraduate programme enhances students’ orientation in the complex networks of social relations that underlie research situations and fosters their capacity to act as experts as well as autonomous and emancipated citizens. Furthermore, the programme stimulates students’ ability to critically assess the relevance of social phenomena, processes and events in their broader contexts, to reveal and analyse networks of relations and the behaviours of entire population groups, organisations and social institutions. The programme offers two specializations: Social Anthropology and Studies of Contemporary Societies. The specialization Social Anthropology is focused on the deeper causes and wider contexts of contemporary social and cultural processes, and on the description of the ethnic, religious and social diversity of changes in Europe. The focus is given on ethnographic methodologies. The specialization Studies of Contemporary Societies is focused on global, complex and increasingly faster processes of transformation and diversification of late modern societies. It takes into consideration the context of the social importance of media, digital technologies, politics and social inequalities. Graduates are suitably qualified for Master’s programmes at the Departments of Sociology or at similarly-oriented departments within or outside of the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Charles University.
