SP characteristics

The covid-19 pandemic, climate change, mass migration and other contemporary phenomena pose major challenges for the functioning of politics in democratic societies not only in the Czech Republic but also worldwide. The Bachelor's programme Political Science and Public Policy is a unique programme in the Czech environment, which takes a comprehensive approach to various aspects of politics, from its anchoring in the political regime of liberal democracy, through the interaction and communication of political actors, to the practice of public policies as a solution to significant social problems mentioned above through the evidence-based policy-making. Here are some of the reasons why it makes sense to study Political Science and Public Policy:
- The programme provides a comprehensive understanding of political reality in its various dimensions (political system, ideas, interaction of actors, practice of solving social problems in particular areas such as education, social policy, etc.),
- The programme provides insight into how social and political issues are addressed through the process of public policy-making and how this process works in its political context.
- The programme closely interconnects the theoretical and practical levels of political studies.
- The programme thus provides its graduates with knowledge and skills, which enable them to meaningfully participate in the evidence-based policy-making process not only as citizens but also as professionals mediating the latest trends (e.g., policy workers, advisors, and so on).

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate of the Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Public Policy is an educated professional at the Bachelor's level who is able to theoretically and factually orient in the functioning of politics in liberal democracies. The graduate has sufficient factual and theoretical knowledge to be able to search for relevant sources, navigate through contemporary scholarship, understand specific problems of democratic governance and mechanisms operating public institutions, and interpret the obtained knowledge in the context of the public policy-making process and the setting of the political system. The graduate is able not only to methodologically design an appropriate analysis of the fundamental problems of democratic governance but also to carry it out independently and to present and interpret the findings in an appropriate written and verbal manner so that they can be used in the design and implementation of particular measures.
The graduate of the Political Science and Public Policy programme will find employment in the public, civil and private sectors as an expert/analyst in the field of public policy, policy analyst, researcher, professional officer, consultant, political activist, creative, media worker, programme director, project manager, a junior and middle manager of public administration institutions, non-profit sector organisations and private companies. The programme's specificity is that it prepares its graduates to become practitioners in specific substantive public policy areas (e.g., health, education, social, etc.) equipped with solid methodological training to examine public policy issues. Thus, they are competent participants in the policy-making process.
