SP characteristics

The study program Social Geography and Regional Development provides theoretical and practical knowledge and skills for the focus on economic geography and regional development, regional policies and spatial planning, study of urban, metropolitan, and peripheral areas, geographies of tourism or human mobility. In these and related thematic areas the study concerns with the interactions of processes at different spatial scales and in their wider environmental, socio-cultural, and political-economical contexts. The staff teaching in this program have been involved in pure and applied research and the study critically reflects international trends and approaches in the respective disciplines. The study also provides training in the broader range of quantitative and qualitative research techniques. A larger number of available compulsory-optional and optional courses allows adjusting the study plans to students’ interests and to their diploma theses.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduates have expert knowledge and skills needed for dealing with various issues in the area of regional development and spatial planning, development of urban and metropolitan as well as peripheral areas, tourism, or migration and mobility in both international and Czech context. In these and related areas they are capable to critically examine specific topics in their wider environmental, social, economic and other contexts. The graduates have methodological skills covering both quantitative and qualitative research techniques, knowledge about the relevant data sources, ability to collect, process and interpret own data. They can work in various positions in both private and public sector such as regional development agencies, strategic planning and consultancy companies, non-governmental organizations, in local, in various governmental institutions at state, regional and local level as well as in international organizations. They can also develop their academic career further by enrolling into the doctoral study programmes in the same department or elsewhere. The broad and complex scope of this study program equips graduates with a capability to react flexibly to gradual changes in labour markets.
