SP characteristics

Public health is a multidisciplinary field of science with a main focus on promoting health, prevention of illness, and development of health care services. In comparison to other medical specialties, the target of exploration and research in public health is not an individual patient or a group of patients, but the entire population. Experts on public health deal with promotion of well-being and health in population, development of services for general public within health care systems. Such promotion and development include attention to various areas affecting population health: health care policies, health care funding, accessibility of health care, assessment of quality, evaluation of effectiveness. In public health, epidemiological methods combined with health care data are used for analysing trends in society and for modelling prospective scenarios. Other important issues belong to agenda of public health as well: ethical, social, legal, and economical aspect of health care systems.

Graduate profile for the public:
After completing a postgraduate study program, the graduate will be able to:

• Understand and interpret various knowledge including new findings related to health care system with ability to foresee long-term social and economic consequences of their application.
• Plan sophisticated projects, acquire and make use of resources necessary for their accomplishment.
• Generate new ideas and/or propose innovative interventions on the basis of theoretical and professional knowledge.
• Present either unique or generic strategies for management of selected problems related to health care including their application in clinical practice.
• Adopt a multidisciplinary approach in proposed interventions and assessment of their outcome.
• Communicate scientific and professional knowledge in another language, at least.
• Deal with complex ethical problems related to projects and to application of the findings.
• Prepare and present project documentation in both Czech and English language.
• Publish at scientific journals and present the outcome of the projects at national and international conferences/congresses.
• Convey the projects including research findings to other members of scientific community as well as to general public.
• Acquire new knowledge and competencies through systematic learning.
• Lead small working teams effectively.
• Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams effectively.
• Provide professional consultation to colleagues from clinical practice, management and/or state administration.
