SP characteristics

The three-year master's program Parasitology and Infection Biology, which is taught exclusively in English, provides, mainly for foreign students, education in parasitology and related scientific disciplines dealing with infection biology. After master's program completion, graduates could be employed and find job applications in healthcare, in various diagnostic laboratories but also in basic research (e.g., in the research of pathogenic agents), as well as in the commercial sphere (pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology companies, etc.). In addition to the necessary fundamentals of various biological disciplines (cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, etc.), students will learn the phenomenon of parasitism in the broad concept (viruses, prokaryotic, and eukaryotic pathogens of hosts belonging to different taxonomic groups). The study is based on selected parts of virology, microbiology, mycology, and parasitology. Emphasis is placed not only on the diversity of parasitic organisms (in a broad sense), but also on their ecology, epidemiology, and transmission to the host, as well as on thein interactions with the infected host (immunological, physiological, biochemical, molecular and other aspects). Practical training is based on various laboratory courses that focus on the detection and identification of parasites and other pathogens in hosts and/or in the environment and on diagnostics of infections and clinical signs. In addition to these classical methods, students will be familiar with the modern skills usable in the current very dynamic scientific and technological environment.

Graduate profile for the public:
A graduate of the follow-up three-year master's program of Parasitology and Infection Biology, which is taught exclusively in English and is intended primarily for foreign students, has expertise in various parasitic and pathogenic organisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths, and arthropods), the causative agent of various diseases in humans, but also domestic animals. He has theoretical knowledge and practical experiences and skills on the detection and identification of various pathogenic agents, but also on their life history, pathogenicity, and epidemiology. Graduates of this master's program are familiar with the general methodology of biological work as well as with several special methods ranging from cellular and molecular biology, immunology and biochemistry, through bioinformatics and taxonomy to epidemiology and GIS methods. They are able to solve theoretical and practical problems related to diagnostics, control, and research of parasites and other pathogenic agents of infectious diseases at multidisciplinary level, both in health care (e.g., in diagnostic laboratories) and in basic and/or applied research, in the governmental but also in the commercial sphere, especially in the pharmaceutical industry or biotechnology companies.
