SP characteristics

Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary subject with chemical focus overlapping the field of chemistry, biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, pharmacy, medicine, environmental science, applied research in biochemistry and many others. The Ph.D. program in Biochemistry is carried out at the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science CU in four years standard period and is provided not only by members of the department but also in co-operation with individual tutors and researchers from several Institutes of Academy of Science or other scientific workplace abroad (e.g. during requisite stay abroad). The doctoral program covers education to autonomous or team scientific/research work, the available modern instrumentation at department enables to perform advanced biochemical experiments and to employ them in research. The precise results evaluation and relevant interpretation of obtained results with essential critical discussion in broader international context is also supervised during the educational process. These topics of scientific work also include international co-operation (scientific stay abroad), active presentations of research at international conferences, manuscripts preparation involving review process and following manuscript revision during its submission to international impacted journals. The participation of students in scientific and pedagogical process at the department is an integral part of tutoring. The Ph.D. studies are finished by passing of the State doctoral exam from Biochemistry and successful defense of dissertation thesis which is based on at least three manuscripts published in reviewed impacted journals (minimally one first-authorship is mandatory). The program has provided education and successful Ph.D. graduation of 108 students between years 2009-2019 and they have been employed at research, clinical, educational and governmental institutions as well as in industry or business trade.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduates of the Ph.D. program in Biochemistry have broad theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology. They are prepared for individual scientific project or cooperation in research group. They are able to design and perform complex biochemical experiments and to adapt and apply them relevantly to any chemical and biological topics. The students are able to present their results, critically evaluate them and to discuss them in respect to international scientific context and quality. The in-depth knowledge not only makes them expert in biochemistry and molecular biology with the well-founded scientific orientation in majority of relative topics. The comprehensive understanding enables students to apply and transfer obtained skills during education at University, and also they are able to extract, simplify and share achieved results to broad scientific as well as laic audiences. In addition to biochemical expertise students also are able to develop their scientific, pedagogical and language skills, presentation and rhetorician proficiency, team work and scientific co-operation during the studies. Therefore, the absolvents are able to serve as principal investigators and leader of research groups at scientific institutions as well as specialists at clinical chemistry laboratories, to be employed educational and governmental institutions as well as to participate in specialized applied research, biotechnological, food and pharmaceutical industry or business trade.
