SP characteristics

Students enrolled in the doctoral programme Germanic-Slavonic Studies follow an individual plan of study which revolves around innovative scientific work involving, primarily, basic research; simultaneously, students further develop their theoretical knowledge and methodological skills in the field while acquiring expertise necessary for writing a doctoral dissertation and embarking on a specialized career upon graduation. The programme takes the form of one of several specializations closely related to the “mother” study programmes in Germanic literature, Germanic philology, Slavonic literature, Slavonic philology, the history of Czech literature and the theory of literature, as well as general and comparative literature. These mother programmes are offered by both partner universities, allowing for the development of an interdisciplinary and international dimension of the study as well as a high adaptability of students who are given an opportunity to develop their language skills.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates are equipped with a solid grounding in the topic of their doctoral dissertation in addition to expertise and skills resulting from the relationship between the student’s specialization and related linguistic disciplines. Graduates have debating skills in German, English and Czech or, alternatively, Italian, being able to talk about specialized topics, present their results at international conferences and further develop their theoretical knowledge. They have experience with publication and editing activities and grant project management. The programme trains for independent scientific work, preparing graduates for careers in the academia as well as culture or politics at international level (work for cultural institutions, diplomatic service, EU bodies etc.). Graduates’ ability to work internationally results from an intensive co-operation with the partner university.
