SP characteristics

Musicology has been an established academic field among the humanities at most European universities since the latter half of the 19th century. As the 20th century progressed, the discipline took root and developed in the US and a number of other countries all over the world. It is dedicated to the study of music in broad contexts (music culture, music in culture), participating in contemporary discourses in the humanities and social sciences. Musicology at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts currently specializes in historical research of early music (up to 1600), modern music (18th to 20th century), and critical study of contemporary music culture (European and non-European).
