SP characteristics

The doctoral study programme Public History reflects the tradition of Czech historiography, whose results have been always appreciated in the professional community and the general public. The core of the study programme is based on a comprehensive study of the history of the Czech Lands, using both proven and modern methodological procedures. This study programme is enriched by the application of the Principles of Applied History (Public History, Applied History, Angewandte Geschichte) in order to enhance graduates' ability to interpret and present historical research results at different levels and environments and to revive understanding for these results in the general public. It is possible to maintain direct communication with the contemporary society in this way, to answer the questions it poses and to support the tendency of thinking in the historical context and find the place of historical culture in society and its various forms.
The study programme offered at the Department of History and Didactics of History combines the professional, study field and didactic requirements which are the integral part of studies.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate of doctoral study programme Public History is equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of historical work, namely in scientific research and related disciplines and acquires skills for further qualification growth. He/she is able to carry out independent conceptual scientific-research work, apply didactic and pedagogical methods, present historical knowledge in an appropriate form to both the professional and lay public as well as encourage public interest into legacy of the past, especially in cultural heritage, and to support tendencies towards critical thinking in historical contexts and responsible behavior within society.

The acquired knowledge and skills will enable graduates to find employment at home or foreign universities (or even secondary schools), in scientific institutes, archives, museums, galleries, in publishing houses and other cultural institutions, in state and local authorities. Last but not least, the acquainted education will also enable the graduate to develop self-employed business activities in the field of History marketing.
