SP characteristics

Ecology is a basic biological discipline devoted to a study of the interactions of organisms with the environment and mutual interactions among organisms. It is not taxonomically limited and uses a wide range of methods from remote sensing, statistical analysis and computer simulations to molecular analyzes or paleontological approaches and their various combinations. An important element of the field is also its connection with evolutionary thinking. Ecology also has considerable applications, e.g. in the field of conservation biology. The specific curriculum of each student will be prepared individually based on the student's orientation and the recommendations of the supervisor/trainers-specialists in the context of the credit system and the subject framework. The unifying element of the study are general methodological subjects (e.g. planning of ecological experiments and statistical processing of ecological data, the use of biomolecular markers in ecological research), as well as subjects focused on the theory of general ecological topics (e.g. large-scale ecology and biodiversity, metapopulation structure, phylogeography). Due to the specificity of methodological approaches, the study program is divided into two specializations, Terrestrial Ecology and Hydrobiology. A large amount of time is reserved for Master thesis. The study is completed by its defense and state exam in general ecology, a profile subject of the specialization (e.g. limnology, plant ecology, animal ecology) and an optional subject.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduates of Ecology acquire theoretical knowledge and practical (methodological) skills covering all common ecological concepts. Within this framework, they achieve a specific education in terrestrial and aquatic ecology, encompassing all structural levels from molecular ecology, autecology, intra- and interpopulation interactions, towards large-scale ecology (communities, ecosystems, phylogeography). They are able to use recent analytical approaches of quantitative ecological data. The graduate is well prepared to further development of research skills during relevant PhD studies, or to professional and methodological work e.g. in surveys, analyses or monitoring for state, public or commercial administration.
