SP characteristics
The aim of the study program “Philosophy and history of science” is to provide independent researchers with comprehensive knowledge in the domain of natural science and its history and with tools that should help them analyze this knowledge in a more general philosophical context. It is an interdisciplinary study program which combines humanities and natural science. It is related not only to philosophy and history but also to psychology, anthropology, logic, political science, cultural studies, sociology etc. Typical candidates include MAs in philosophy or history, or graduates from natural sciences, usually biology but possibly also psychology, physics, or mathematics.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates will acquire good general knowledge of the contemporary discussion in the philosophy of science and the history of – primarily European – thought and science. Aside from philosophy, they will also gain insight into the methodology of science and should be able to apply this knowledge to specific cases. Depending on the subject of their thesis, they should become experts in a specific domain in science and a specific period in history. However, they will also be aware of the wider philosophical and cultural context. The study program is complex and interdisciplinary, promoting the ability to examine, through analogy, similar cases in different circumstances. Graduates should thus be able to independently investigate a given topic. Also, thanks to various seminars, they should be able to present their results (including those that are complex and unintuitive) in an active, expert, and nontrivial manner. In discussions, they should be able to adopt a critical stance and to argue for it. In this way, graduates should be capable of participating in both technical and popular discussions.
We want to promote critical thinking in our graduates. They should be able to analyze a wide range of problems, including new and non-obvious challenges. They should be capable of a general synthetic perspective, of taking into account the wider context of the given domain of study. They should be able to understand philosophical and scientific texts and interpret them critically and within a historical perspective. They should be capable of tracing various issues within a wider context and of identifying possible difficulties of scientific research from an “external” perspective. Given their knowledge of various methodologies, they are aware of their pros and cons and are able to expose them concerning a given scientific problem.
