SP characteristics
SP Applied geology covers fields of environmental geology, geology of mineral resources, technical mineralogy and petrology, engineering geology, rock mechanics, hydrogeology, applied geophysics. Commonly, there is a close relationship to related technical disciplines focusing on exploitation, processing and utilisation of mineral raw materials, utilisation of non-conventional energy resources, civil engineering and foundation, waste management, and/or environmental protection.
The aim of the study is training of independent scientific work in the field of applied geoscience starting from research aims and hypotheses formulation, proposing of a research plan including selection of appropriate methods of study, performing of sampling, laboratory experiments, application of appropriate analytical methods and means of data processing, critical discussion of results and presentation of conclusions. Along with independent scientific work, the graduate learns on how to work in multidisciplinary team. Graduate should be able to present results of his work on international conferences and renowned international scientific journals.
Due to broad theme coverage of applied geology, the specific topic of dissertation is selected from one the above mentioned areas; however, the overlaps to other fields of applied geology are common during fulfilment of the research aims. This approach allows for adoption of multidisciplinary work capabilities.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate gained deep theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of applied geoscience (focus on environmental geology, geology of mineral resources, technical mineralogy and petrology, engineering geology, rock mechanics, hydrogeology, applied geophysics) and related technical disciplines. Deep scientific background and special skills are closely related to the actual topic of a doctoral thesis; commonly based on solving problems by combination of approaches from several scientific disciplines. By acquiring methodical and experimental approaches of independent scientific work, the graduate is acquainted of individual creative thinking. The graduate is able to propose basic subject of research topic, to formulate working hypotheses and to test them, to evaluate obtained data, to discuss them and/or to propose new scientific theories. The graduate is capable to propose and to run complicated laboratory / field measurements. The graduate presents the findings on the international conferences, writes original scientific publications and projects, reviews work of other scientists. The graduate is capable to present scientific findings to public in an understandable form. Along with ability of independent scientific work, the graduate acquired ability of team work even in multidisciplinary teams. By acquiring methods of individual scientific work and thinking, the graduate is eligible for positions in academic sector (universities, research institutes), state administration, public-service sector and private companies involved in the field of applied geology (including exploitation / processing of natural resources, waste management and/or environmental protection). The graduate can quickly adapt for specific work conditions, has ability to critically diagnose the problem and to propose optimum solution. The graduate acquired skills necessary for conduction of exploratory work in the field of mineral deposits, engineering geology, hydrogeology or applied geophysics. The graduate is prepared to be involved in international research teams and to be employed by research subjects abroad.
