SP characteristics
Geophysics and Planetary Science covers the study of the Earth and planetary bodies using physical methods. These methods include using earthquake physics and seismic wave propagation, thermal evolution and deformation of the Earth and planets on various time scales, and the study of gravity gravitational and electromagnetic fields, and of planetary interiors. The geophysical phenomena are analyzed and interpreted using mathematical modeling. The masters program offers studies of geophysics that deepen the basic knowledge in physics, mathematics, and programming, and develops competencies required in basic and applied geophysical and planetary research. In the courses, emphasis is put on linking the curriculum with contemporary development in the field, and it is common that students participate in cutting-edge geophysical research.

Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates possess advanced knowledge in general branches of physics, in particular in continuum mechanics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetic and gravitational fields, and deep knowledge and practical skills in the main geophysical and planetary disciplines. They are able to independently solve the basic problems in the field of earthquake source and seismic wave propagation, analyze and interpret phenomena observed in the electromagnetic and gravitational field of the Earth and planets, and perform computer simulations of thermal evolution and deformation of planetary bodies using advanced methods of continuum mechanics. They solve these problems using the methods of numerical mathematics, mathematical modeling and computer physics that they have learned. After they have solved these problems, they are able to clearly present their results, written in standard scientific form and ready for publication. Alumni usually get positions in research and industrial institutions of geophysical and geodetic orientation, both locally and internationally. Their advanced skills in mathematical modeling, computer physics, and advanced programming, make opportunities in other fields also readily available to them.
