SP characteristics

The aim of the Hebrew and Jewish Studies programme is to provide students with knowledge of the Hebrew language and Jewish cultural history, the two principal tools that will enable them to explore different modes of Jewish life, religion, literature and interaction with the world. Graduates are trained to become experts on Jewish languages and culture with a particular understanding and appreciation of its internal diversity. They are led to understand the significance and historical transformations of the perceptions of Jews as a social and religious minority. They are able to critically interpret and examine, in the light of contemporary scholarly approaches, information related to Jewish culture in the past and at present. Graduates are trained for scholarly work and may continue their careers as doctoral students and scholars in the humanities. Furthermore, graduates are equipped with thorough knowledge of general culture and with unique tools for intercultural contact and interaction, and with a particular sensitivity to cultural diversity.

Graduates of the Hebrew and Jewish Studies programme receive expert knowledge of Jewish languages and culture. They specialize in a specific stratum of Hebrew and its relevant textual corpus or in a specific period in Jewish cultural history, which they study using Hebrew as a source language. They have good knowledge of scholarly literature in the field. They have thorough understanding of Jewish culture and its internal diversity resulting from its rich history and diasporic nature. They understand the significance and historical transformations of the perceptions of Jews as a social and religious minority. They are able to critically interpret and examine, in the light of contemporary scholarly approaches, information related to Jewish culture in the past and at present. They have an excellent command of academic English.
