SP characteristics

The course of Demography with the various specializations comprises the teaching of standard methods and principles of demographic analysis including analyzing trends in mortality, fertility, nuptuality and divorce and demographic structures. Particular attention is dedicated to population development of the Czech Republic. Further studies include more specific disciplines: Demographic data collection, World population development and Population estimates and projections. The course is completed by a basic introduction into mathematics, statistics, information technology and GIS application. The course has four specializations: Demography with History, Demography with Sociology, Demography with Social Geography, Demography with Public and Social Policy, which are guaranteed in collaboration with partner Departments and Institutes of Charles University. A successful completion of a given specialization enables the student to conduct analyses of population developments in a wider context. The course is concluded by a bachelor thesis and state exam from Demography and the relevant specialization.

Graduate profile for the public:
The student who has completed a bachelor’s degree course Demography with a specialization masters basic demographic concepts and methods and is able to apply them in the study of demographic reproduction and population developemnt of a specific population. He has extensive knowledge of domestic and international data sources and is able to find solutions to crucial demographic issues at supranational, national, regional and local level, while the knowledge acquired in the given specialization (social geography, sociology, history public and social policy) enables him to conduct analyses of population trends in a wider context. The student is proficient in mastering the current, widely used IT applications for text processing, for clasifying, storing and processing numerical data and for the presentation of scientific information. He is able to search for and exploit available data, literature and other relevant sources of information. Upon successful completion of the course, he is ready to continue studying for a master’s degree in Demography. Alternatively, if he decides not to pursue his studies further, he can work in research in the area of social studies, history, geography, politics, healthcare or economics, or in the more practical fields of state administration or statistical service as well as in human resources and administration of large corporations.
