SP characteristics

Religious Studies consist in the study of religious beliefs, symbols, myths and rituals in their historical and cultural context. This particular study programme is specific in its focus on religious or generally symbolic though and action. The aim of the programme is to study the various ways in which people orient themselves in the world and find it meaningful – regardless of whether they do so by means of philosophical conceptions, or through myths, symbolic images and actions. The program consists of two specializations: (1) The History of Religions specialization aims at training experts on various religious traditions; the student choses two religious traditions, and one classical or oriental language relevant for the study of source texts from one of them. (2) The Present-day Symbolic Phenomena specialization focuses on the study of Western religious or quasi-religious phenomena of the recent past or present.
