A positive approval from the admission committee.
The deadline for submitting the application is April 30, 2026. The applicant can apply to one of the four programs offered. It is possible to apply for a full-time or combined form of study in Czech or English.
Please choose the study language: English, and study program: Economics and Finance, when filling out the application form.
The required attachments are as follows:
- Certificates of graduate education.
- Transcript of undergraduate and graduate education (a list of courses taken and grades).
- Curriculum Vitae (structured and with a list of publications).
- Evidence of advanced knowledge of the English language (if available).
- Dissertation research project (min. 3 standard pages).
- Dissertation research project abstract (max. 200 words).
Highly recommended attachments:
- One recommendation letter from a prospective supervisor, preferably affiliated with the Institute of Economic Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University.
- One recommendation letter from an academician.
- Any additional relevant documents (such as certificates of language skills). These might or might not be considered by the admission committee.

Both recommendation letters should be attached to the application. The letters should also be
emailed to the Chairman of the Doctoral Council at the Institute of Economic Studies, Faculty
of Social Sciences of Charles University, prof. Evzen Kočenda at evzen.kocenda@fsv.cuni.cz and to CDS at cds.ies@fsv.cuni.cz.
The letter of a prospective supervisor should confirm the willingness of the preferably IES-associated academic economist to be the applicant’s supervisor in case of a successful application.
The second letter should be written by an academician who can provide an academic and professional evaluation of an applicant.
There is no entrance exam as part of the admission process. It is assumed that an applicant possesses professional knowledge at the level of a graduate of the IES master program. The admission committee leads a technical debate about the quality of an applicant. The committee evaluates the documents submitted by the applicant, in particular the quality of the research project proposal (max. 40 points). The committee further evaluates the originality and contribution of the research project (max. 20 points), the applicant's motivation (max. 20 points), and the applicant's overall readiness for scientific work (max. 20 points). The applicant can receive a maximum of 100 points. The Admissions Committee may request additional documents if necessary.
The point limit for accepting applicants is set by the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, considering the number of applicants and the capacity of the faculty.
Podmínkou přijetí ke studiu v doktorském studijním programu je řádné ukončení studia v magisterském studijním programu.

The program concentrates on economic theory and its applications in economic and financial analyses. The program focuses on modeling and analyzing economic processes and the behavior of economic agents using modern microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, econometrics, and finance. The doctoral program aims to prepare highly qualified and trained experts for academia, international organizations, the financial sector, and other industries.
