This course gives students a basic orientation in the history of western art from the Medieval Ages to the contemporary period through the architecture and art of Prague. The city is seen as a virtual open-air museum and a life-size 3-D reading book; therefore the classroom lectures are combined with regular excursions throughout the city. Students learn to understand the specific language of architecture and fine art. They are encouraged to acquire knowledge through their own activities (such as sketchbooks and presentations), expected to show interest in the history of art, to attend libraries, come prepared to the lectures and show an ability of independent study. Readings prepared specifically for this course are available on the University web-site. (Parents and friends are welcomed to join the lecture by prior arrangement with the lecturer.) |

Students will be evaluated through the following assignments : Class presentation (25%), quizzes (15%), final test (25%). Students are required to participate actively on the course. Besides several quizzes and a comprehensive final test, each student is supposed to give a presentation on a chosen topic, consulted with the lecturer in advance. The presentation may be given in the class or preferably outside. If in clasroom, students can use powerpoint, but any, even simple, photo viewer is accepted. After presenting, a paper with complete bibliographical notes is due, about 5 - 10 pages long. Sketchbook (20%): Please be as creative as you can! Have a sketchbook and a pencil always on you. Class participation (15%) is considered classroom activity. Students are regularly questioned about the past lectures and readings prior to each lecture. Attendance is mandatory, and so is consistent class preparation and active participation. A single absence will not adversely affect the grade but more than that will automatically lower it. In addition, exam dates cannot be changed for any reason. Format of Examination The exam consists of image identifications. It is based on the material assigned in the readings, classroom lectures and field trips. The student will not be examined on any information not found in the required reading or presented either in class lectures or during the field trips. |
