LECTURE A survey course in 20th-century English literature. A basic outline of canonical writing is presented in chronological fashion, based on the consensus of traditional literary historiography. This map of English literature is supplemented by lectures on the most vibrant alternatives to the generally accepted styles and genres. Furthermore, the course provides an outline of related literatures in English – Irish, Scottish, diasporic, colonial and post-colonial – and charts their interactions with English literature on the one hand, and their mutual cross-fertilization on the other. ASSESSMENT Credit requirements include regular attendance at seminars, active in-class participation based on the required reading, an oral presentation, passing an in-class essay, and submitting a final essay on a given topic (minimum length 3000 words). For details see the syllabi of the individual seminars. The course is concluded by the comprehensive examination in the Literatures on the British Isles; in order to be admitted to the exam, students must first receive a credit (zápočet) from all three LBI I to III courses. CUMULATIVE EXAMINATION (souborná zkouška) To the series of courses LBI I-III all students have to pass an oral examination (souborná zkouška). The student will be examined in two of the five historical periods on the B.A. reading list (for this, see departmental website; the choice of periods is at the student’s discretion). To demonstrate their knowledge of the texts representative for the selected periods students must submit reading lists to their examiner. (These lists do not have to be identical with sections of the B.A. list, but they must correspond to them in terms of quantity, range of reading, and historical as well as aesthetic importance of selected texts.) Students are given one question per selected period (the questions are relatively general, e.g. The poetry of the Lake Poets, The development of early modern tragedy, Virginia Woolf as a modernist etc.). Students are expected to have good knowledge of British literary history not limited merely to their reading lists. |
