"Critical Praxis: Alienation & the Work of Resistance..."

Tuesdays 5:30, room 111



The seminar will reflect upon the theory & practice of avantgarde movements from 1916 to the present day (Dada, Surrealism, Lettrism, Situationism, Fluxus... etc.), as responses to the experience of alienation characteristic of industrial societies from the end of the 18th century -- & which forms a major line of critique from Hegel, Marx & Freud, to Breton, Brecht, Kojève, Lacan, Debord, Althusser, Derrida & Cixous, among others.

Participants are then given the opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into praxis through forms of public intervention & by constructing text/art installations at "The Solution” Galery in Žižkov.

Podmínky zakončení předmětu

Assessment for the single credit (Z) will be based on a short weekly "position paper" plus a final 3000 word critical essay [or equivalent as agreed with lecturer] (due 31 January; essay guidelines can be found on the departmental website); attendance (max. absences: 2); & participation in discussion and practical activities, including 3 group workshops at The Solution/Dadaistische Seminar (31 October; 28 November; 19 December). NB that only MA students are entitled to apply for the additional credit (Zk) in this seminar.
