Anotace

This seminar comprises an advanced critical survey of the works of James Joyce. Texts under consideration during this semester will be:

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN
Ulysses
Finnegans Wake

Readings will be based on a range of critical texts, including the Richard Ellmann biography, Roland McHugh?s study of sigla in Finnegans Wake, Attridge & Ferrer?s Post-structuralist Joyce, and Techne by Louis Armand. Students are expected to demonstrate initiative in familiarising themselves with available critical materials. cf. HJS (Hypermedia Joyce Studies) online: www.geocities.com/hypermedia_joyce. Familiarity with all of Joyce?s major texts is a pre-requisite for this course.


Outline
The seminar will comprise a combination of close readings of the texts along with discussion of contemporary theoretical approaches to Joyce, in particular Poststructuralist, Genetic and Cybernetic approaches. The seminar will also address Joyce?s historical placement within the evolution of the European avant-garde and the advent of telemedia. Related discussions will cover the work of Filippo Marinetti, Guillaume Apollinaire, Blaise Cendrars, Sergei Eisenstein, Tristan Tzara, Samuel Beckett, Gertrude Stein, Marcel Duchamp and John Cage.


Assessment
Assessment will be in the form of a research paper between 2,500 and 4,000 words, due 23 May, 2002. MLA style applies. Attendance is compulsory.
