The course "Geographies of Sexualities: Queering Place and Space" aims to challenge traditional perceptions of
space as a passive backdrop for social events and promote understanding of space as a dynamic dimension that
co-constructs our subjectivity and everyday experiences. This course explores the mutually constitutive
relationship between space and subjectivity within an intersectional framework, examines the concept of
"queering" geography/space, and problematizes dominant discourses related to (cis)heteronormative and queer
spaces.
The course will delve into specific themes such as the urban-rural dichotomy in the geographies of sexualities, the
experiences of lesbian women in space, the concept of home, commodification of space and pinkwashing, and
queer geopolitics in the context of anti-gender movements. Through extensive reading, critical discussion, and
practical application, students will develop a nuanced understanding of how identities influence spatial
experiences and how feminist, queer, and decolonial approaches can be applied in geography and in their lives.
