The course will respond to today’s societal trends but in a contrast to them, we will seek positive ways to engage young people—whether they are students or youth in general—so that through participation in public spaces and politics they have the opportunity to be heard, acquire knowledge how to participate, and develop an interest in taking part in democratic decision-making processes. (Despite of the all obstacles of our divides societies).
The course will work in a sensitive way with modern trends in civic education, such as the theory of belonging (Powel, Menendian), and will be conducted on the principle of non-indoctrination, with the boundaries for freedom of expression defined by the Constitution of the Czech Republic and its Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. To stimulate students’ interest, new participatory and artistic research methods will be introduced. We will emphasise methods carried out with a broader community chosen by the student.
We will primarily work with the CLRA (Community-led Research and Action) method, as developed by Naomi van Stapele at the Centre of Expertise ‘Global and Inclusive Learning’ at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS). The course will build on the Horizon YOUROPE project "Visionary Roadmaps: Crafting an Inclusive and Participatory European Democracy with Youth and Communities" and will employ the participatory and artistic methods used throughout that research.
Additionally, the course will reflect on the specifics and challenges of Central Europe in terms of youth engagement and politics in general, and will require ongoing self-reflection regarding the ethical dilemmas associated with participatory research and the presentation of its results.
The course does not require any previous knowledge of civics, political science, or art.
