The issue of demographic ageing is being studied in many aspects.Trends in age groups and indicators of population ageing in both developed and developing countries and the Czech Republic are addressed. A new concept based on a prospective age implies a change in traditional understanding of ageing. Furthermore, the following themes are presented for the elderly population: Health status, poverty, material deprivation and social exclusion, household structures and housing costs, economic activity and pension systems, and society attitudes as well as policies and strategies adopted.

1.       Population ageing – demographic perspective. Definitions, developments of centenarians and supercentenarians. Indicators of population ageing, trends in age groups: history and forecast. Factors of population ageing: birth rate, death rate and initial age structure. World, developing and developed countries, Europe, position of the Czech Republic.

 

2.       Retrospective and prospective age. Perception of old age, health and life satisfaction. Changes in mortality parameters of older age. Definition of prospective age - a new indicator of ageing. The importance and use of prospective age to measure population ageing. International comparison of demographic ageing indicators in terms of prospective and retrospective age. The position of the Czech Republic.

 

3.       The health of the elderly population. Definition of health. Determinants of health and factors of death. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Theories of Epidemiological and Health transition. The Cardiovascular Revolution. Health indicators and their trends with a focus on the elderly population. International comparison and position of the Czech Republic. Partnership and education factors.

 

4.       Seniors: poverty, material deprivation and social exclusion. Definitions and concepts. Indicators and data sources. Poverty line. International comparison and position of the Czech Republic. Situation of the senior population compared to other age groups.

 

5.       Policies and strategies. National Action Plans, priorities, goals. Government Council for Senior Citizens and Population Ageing. Gender issue. Quality of life in old age. History of population ageing programmes. International Plans of Action.

 

6.       Senior households. Data, indicators. Household types and structures, the reference person. Trends over time. Characteristics of household members. Marital status, gender, age. Regional differentiation. One-person households. International comparisons within the EU.

 

7.       Senior housing. Housing stock and its development. Population by type of housing. Flat equipment. Housing types by gender, age, education. Housing costs. Regional differentiation.

 

8.       Senior economic activity. Employment factors. Working and non-working pensioners, age, gender, education, employment. Regional differentiation. International comparison.

 

9.       Attitudes towards the elderly - ageism. Definitions and history. Old age myths. Stereotypes - the positive or negative beliefs. Prejudice (an unjustifiable negative attitude) establishing ageism. Sources of ageism. Perception of population ageing in the Czech Republic. The problem of loneliness. Legislation in the context of discrimination (unjustified negative behaviors) and ageism. Seniors' experience of discrimination. International comparison.

 

10.    Pension schemes. History. Three models. Czech Republic - development of legislation. Principles of equivalence and solidarity. Social security funding schemes. Current pension system. Pension expenditures. International comparison - retirement age, replacement ratio.
