Cílem kurzu je představit kryosféru jako důležitou a rychle se měnící, přesto však stále poměrně neznámou součást planetárního ekosystému a biom zahrnující unikátní biotopy a společenstva. Důraz je kladen na současný výzkum přednášejících. Kurz je zaměřen na ekosystémové procesy v kryosféře a je komplementární ke kurzům Zimní ekologie a Polární ekologie. Jazykem kurzu je angličtina.

The aim of this course is to introduce the cryosphere as an important and rapidly changing yet relatively unknown
part of the Earth’s system and a biome that contains distinct ecosystems and communities. Emphasis will be
placed on recent and/or current research by the lecturers. This course will be principally focused on ecosystem-
scale processes within the cryosphere and is complementary to the courses Winter Ecology and Polar Ecology.
The course will be in English.

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to

 

·        define the cryosphere

·        describe its significance for the global climate and hydrological system

·        distinguish between the main cryospheric ecosystems and describe their geographical distributions and the time scales on which they operate

·        explain the key differences between cryospheric and non-cryospheric ecosystems

·        describe the ‘hard limits’ for life in the cryosphere and the adaptations of organisms for these conditions

·        describe the principal sources of energy and nutrients in all cryospheric ecosystems

·        explain the limited diversity of life forms in cryospheric ecosystems

·        discuss the potential scenarios of the future of cryosphere ecosystems based on projected climate change trajectories

·        summarise principles, strengths, and limitations of major approaches for ecological research in the cryosphere

·        demonstrate critical thinking when assessing cryosphere research-related news
