Tato přednáška v angličtině se zaměřuje na vztahy mezi Východem a Západem během období studené války. Velká pozornost je věnována východoevropské (a československé) perspektivě této fáze konfliktu mezi Východem a Západem. Z časového hlediska se kurz zaměřuje na šedesátá a sedmdesátá léta. Zahrnuta je však i širší perspektiva předchozího a následujícího období. To zahrnuje např. problémy, jako bylo začlenění východní Evropy do sovětské sféry vlivu, západní a sovětský přístup k několika krizím ve východním bloku a během „překvapení“ (annus mirabilis) roku 1989.
Kde hledat počátky détente? Co formovalo americko-sovětské vztahy během a po druhé světové válce s ohledem na situaci ve východní Evropě? Jaké byly sovětské úmysly a jak se s nimi Západ v průběhu času vyrovnával? Jak viděl Sovětský svaz a Spojené státy Východní Evropu? Co formovalo pozice klíčových politiků Západu? Jaká byla specifika francouzské „détente“, západoněmecké „Ostpolitik“ nebo amerického „stavění mostů“? Byl Leonid Brežněv skutečným fanouškem détente? Jak ovlivnila sovětská invaze do Československa v roce 1968 détente a jak byla tato událost reflektována na Západě? Co se můžeme poučit z minulé situace v kontextu současných vztahů mezi Západem a Ruskem? To jsou některé z otázek, které budou diskutovány.

This lecture in English concentrates on East-West relations during the Cold War period of détente. Close attention is devoted to the Eastern European (and Czechoslovak) perspective of this phase of the East-West conflict. In terms of time, the course focuses on 1960s and 1970s. A broader perspective of the preceding and following period is, however, also included. It involves e.g. issues like the incorporation of Eastern Europe into the Soviet sphere of influence, Western and Soviet approaches towards several Eastern Bloc crises as well as their stands during the “surprise” of annus mirabilis of 1989.
Where are the origins of détente? What formed US-Soviet relations during and after WW2 with regard to the situation in the Eastern Europe? What were Soviet intentions and how did the West come to terms with them throughout the period? How did the Soviet Union and the United States view Eastern Europe? What formed the positions of the key politicians of the West? What were the specifics of French “Détente”, West German “Ostpolitik” or US “Bridge-building” and why? Was Leonid Brezhnev a true fan of détente? How did the 1968 Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia influence détente and how was this event reflected throughout the West? What can we learn from the past situation in the context of current relations between the West and Russia? These are some of the issues that will be discussed.

Cíl předmětu -
Cílem předmětu je poskytnout studentům znalosti a porozumění příčinám, vývoji a důsledkům procesu détente. Účastník kurzu bude mít možnost seznámit se s děním uvnitř zemí Východního bloku a jak (ne)ovlivnilo situaci na Západě a (ne)ovlivnilo vztahy mezi Východem a Západem během studené války. Nepovinné promítání (pokud aktuální covidová situace dovolí) několika filmů reprezentantujících československou novou vlnu nabídne seznámení se s dobovými filmovými prameny a hlubší pochopení situace v Československu v období krátké liberalizace šedesátých let s jejími vzestupy i pády - Pražským jarem 1968 a následnou sovětskou invazí do Československa.

Aim of the course is to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of causes, development and consequences of the détente process. Participant of the course will learn what was happening internally within the countries of the Eastern Bloc and how these events did (or did not) influence the situation within the West or did (or did not) influence the East - West relations during the Cold War. An optional screening (depending on the actuall covid situation) of several films, representing the Czechoslovak New Wawe, will provide a possibility to get to know through the film sources of the period more indept understanding of the context situation in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s' short period of liberalisation with its ups and downs - the 1968 Prague Spring and the following Soviet led invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Přednáška 1. Počátky détente. Bilaterální spolupráce během druhé světové války a její dopad na pozdější americko-sovětské vztahy. “Fenomén„ dobrého strýčka Joea (Stalina)“ vs. Stalinovy skutečné politiké a strategické plány s (Východní) Evropou.
Přednáška 2. Stalinovy cíle a taktika směrem k Západu po skončení druhé světové války. Kennanova kritika politiky FDR vůči SSSR. Postavení Východní Evropy (při pohledu z Východu i Západu). Politika zadržování komunismu a její dopad na Východní Evropu.
Přednáška 3. Americká politika vůči SSSR po komunistickém puči v Československu v roce 1948. Stalinovy plány napadení Jugoslávie a následný vliv korejské války.

Pro snazší pochopení nabízíme vysvětlení jednotlivých stupňů: A - Výborně. Student prokázal vynikající výkon, originalitu a mimořádně pochopil předmět. B - Velmi dobře. Student dobře chápe předmět a ukázal určitou originalitu myšlení. Nad průměrný výkon, ale s některými chybami. C - Dobře. Obecně dobrá práce s řadou významných chyb. D - uspokojivý. Student prokázal určité porozumění předmětu, ale nepodařilo se mu toto porozumění převést do důsledně originální práce. Celkový dobrý výkon s řadou významných chyb. E - Dostačující. Přijatelný výkon se značnými nevýhodami. Výkon splňuje minimální požadavky. F - selhání. Studentovi se nepodařilo zvládnout předmět předmětu. Z - Pass / Credit.
Pokud je kurz zakončen jiným studijním požadavkem než zkouškou, není klasifikován, ale zaznamená se jako „Zápočet (Z)“. Jedná se ve skutečnosti o průchod ve dvoustupňovém systému klasifikace úspěšnosti / neúspěchu. Doporučení pro použití klasifikace A-F je následující: Vyhodnotit výkon studenta v procentech (0-100%) a podle toho poskytnout hodnocení 0-50% = F, 51-60% = E, 61-70% = D, 71-80% = C, 81-90% = B, 91% a více = A. Doufáme, že tuto změnu přijmete pozitivně, protože má nepopiratelné výhody: Zjednodušené uznávání kurzů studovaných v zahraničí (většina evropských univerzit používá konverzní stupnici A-F, převod z 1-4 klasifikační stupnice nebyl zcela přesný). Zpřesnění stupnice hodnocení (6stupňová stupnice dává učiteli příležitost rozlišovat výkony studentů než v případě čtyřstupňové stupnice). Srozumitelnost pro příchozí / výměnné studenty nebo zahraniční studenty studující na FSV UK (nejrozšířenější je procento nebo stupnice A-F).

Due to modifications of the internal regulations the Faculty of Social Sciences has changed the system of classification from 1-4 grading scale to internationally recognized A-F grading system, often referred to as ECTS grading. For easier understanding we offer an explanation of the individual grades:
A – Excellent. The student has shown excellent performance, originality and displayed an exceptional grasp of the subject.
B – Very Good. The student understands the subject well and has shown some originality of thought. Above the average performance, but with some errors.
C – Good. Generally sound work with a number of notable errors.
D – Satisfactory. The student has shown some understanding of the subject matter, but has not succeeded in translating this understanding into consistently original work. Overall good performance with a number of significant errors.
E – Sufficient. Acceptable performance with significant drawbacks. Performance meets the minimum requirements.
F – Fail. The student has not succeeded in mastering the subject matter of the course.
Z – Pass/Credit. Where a course is completed by a study requirement other than examination, it is not graded, but is recorded as “Zápočet (Z).” This is in effect a Pass in a two-tier Pass/Fail grading system.
The recommendation for using the A-F classification is as follows: To evaluate the student's performance in percentage (0-100 %) and providing the evaluation accordingly
0-50 % = F,
51-60 % = E,
61-70 % = D,
71-80 % = C,
81-90 % = B,
91% and more = A.
We hope that you will accept this change positively because of its undeniable advantages:
Simplified recognition of courses studied abroad (most European universities use the conversion scale A-F, the conversion from 1-4 grading scale was not quite accurate).
Refinement of the grading scale (6-degree scale gives the teacher the opportunity to more distinguish student performance than with the 4-degree scale).
Intelligibility for incoming/exchange students or international students studying at FSV UK (percentage or A-F grade scale is the most widespread).
