The course is taught separately for the Modern History (Prof. Ota Konrád) and Area Studies (Assoc. Jakub Eberle) study programs.
During the seminar, students present the research context of their dissertation topic. They prepare an analysis of the current state of the art in the field to which their particular doctoral research is intended to contribute. They will first briefly present the previous research developments in the field and then focus on the current state of knowledge, i.e., they will identify the main figures, institutions, or texts, discuss the main trends, their common and divergent moments, and focus on the main arguments in the ongoing scholarly debate in the field of research under investigation. They will then clearly define their own professional position and its contribution to the knowledge of the issue and thus justify the choice of their research topic and its methodological focus based on a careful analysis of the current state of the art. Kurz je vyučován ve formě dvou seminářů - pro Moderní dějiny (prof. Ota Konrád) a pro Mezinárodní teritoriální studia (doc. Jakub Eberle). V rámci semináře studenti prezentují badatelský kontext tématu své disertační práce. To znamená, že připraví analýzu současného stavu poznání v oblasti mezinárodního výzkumu, do níž má jejich konkrétní doktorský výzkum přispět, tzn., že identifikují hlavní postavy, instituce či texty, rozeberou hlavní trendy, jejich shodné i rozdílné momenty a zaměří se na hlavní argumenty v probíhající odborné diskusi ve zkoumané oblasti mezinárodního výzkumu. Následně jasně definují vlastní odbornou pozici a její příspěvek k poznání dané problematiky, a tak na základě pečlivé analýzy současného stavu poznání zdůvodní volbu tématu svého výzkumu a jeho metodologické zaměření. Prerequisites for the course The prerequisites for successful completion of the seminar are: 1. Presentation at the seminar 2. Regular, active participation and reading of the materials sent. Only absences due to health reasons or if the student is fulfilling another compulsory part of his/her doctoral studies, especially a participation in an international conference, will be excused. In this case, it is necessary to discuss your absence in advance with the seminar leader. In any case, students must plan their other obligations so that they do not conflict with the seminar. 3. Presentation of the thesis. The thesis includes a detailed discussion of the basic theoretical and methodological issues of the dissertation and an analysis of the sources and literature in approximately 15 standard pages. Předpoklady pro absolvování kurzu Předpokladem úspěšného absolvování semináře jsou: 1. Vystoupení na semináři 2. Pravidelná, aktivní účast a četba zaslaných materiálů. Omluvena bude pouze absence ze zdravotních důvodů či v případě, že student plní jinou povinnou součást doktorského studia, zvláště zahraniční stáž či účast na mezinárodní konferenci. V takovém případě je nutné svoji absenci s předstihem předjednat s vedoucím semináře. V každém případě musí studenti plánovat své ostatní povinnosti tak, aby nebyly v časové kolizi se seminářem. 3. Předložení tezí disertační práce. Teze práce obsahují podrobný rozbor základních teoretických a metodologických problémů disertační práce a analýzu pramenů a literatury, a to v rozsahu přibližně 15 normovaných stran. The main teaching method is discussion, with an argument-based defense of the relevant parts of the dissertation by the student and its discussion by the seminar participants. Prerequisites for the course The following are prerequisites for successful completion of the seminar: 1. Attendance at the seminar (see above) 2. Regular, active participation and reading of the materials provided. Only absences due to health reasons or if the student is fulfilling another compulsory part of his/her doctoral studies, especially a foreign internship or participation in an international conference, will be excused. In this case, it is necessary to discuss the absence in advance with the course leader. In any case, students must plan their other commitments so that they do not conflict with the seminar. 3. Presentation of the thesis.
