The course deals with the evolution of the Hungarian political system. The course will provide an historical introduction, which will introduce students to the evolution process of the Hungarian Political systems in contemporary history up to current times. Subsequently, the positions and roles of the basic institutions will be discussed: the government, the parliament, and the judiciary in light of the various constitutional reforms. A third part will focus on the evolution of the Hungarian party system. A specific focus will be dedicated to the democratic backsliding that has characterised Hungary since the beginning of Viktor Orban second government. In order to receive their credits, students are required to actively participate in class, attending at least 9 of the 12 sessions (participation component), and give a presentation at the end of the course on a topic of choice (workshop). The presentation should focus on a specific topic covered during the course. There is no final exam; thus, non-attending students will not be able to pass the course.
