The seminar is concerned with some classic as well as new perspectives in cross-cultural studies. We start with Geert Hofstede´s concept of cultural dimensions. The second lesson presents and overview over four approaches to the study of culture – a positivist, an interpretive, a postmodern, and a critical approach. We make ourselves familiar with the single steps of empirically based cross-cultural research.
In the third lesson, we focus on Modernization theory – a concept by Ronald Inglehart – who basically understands "culture" as a value system.
In the fourth lesson, we get to know different subjects and fields of interest in cross-cultural studies.
