The challenges and opportunities of globalisation facing modern journalism constitute the centrepiece of the Master’s degree programme in Journalism, Media and Globalisation. The processes of digitalisation in focus in this course, constitute an excellent example of such challenges and opportunities. Digitalisation undermines the monopoly of news and information traditionally maintained by the news media. Concurrently, the same processes enable journalists to reach new audiences, produce more innovative forms of reporting and thus to redefine the boundaries of the profession. Through its combination of academic knowledge and journalistic practices, The Challenges of Digital Journalism – Academic and Practical Approaches addresses these issues and prepares students to study the challenges and possibilities to journalism posed by increased digitalisation processes. The course also prepares and introduces students to the subsequent courses in the programme.

The course will combine a practical, skill-centred focus with an academic, research-centred one. Practically, students will learn to work journalistically with new media platforms to widen their digital mindset. They will produce journalistic pieces in a digital setup, combining core and basic principles of journalism with a digital approach, including the use of different types of media. Academically, students will be trained in researching relevant theoretical literature, writing a literature review, phrasing a research question, and be introduced to the fundamentals of crafting research designs. Thus, students will learn both to produce/manage different digitalised media products and be introduced to the basics of researching the interrelation between journalism and digitalisation processes. The course is broadly divided into two main parts. The first part is taught at the Department of Media and Journalism Studies, AU while the second part is taught at the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX). - The first part introduces students to the basics of social science research and major theoretical perspectives concerning digitialization and journalism. Classes for this part will be a mixture of lectures, working sessions with TAs, group assignments and group presentations. With regards to the lectures for this first part, we will use a blended learning approach. In practice, this means that while some lectures will be live, in class and face-to-face, for some sessions of the course, the lecture will be delivered in the form of a recorded video lecture. The recorded video lectures will be uploaded on Brightspace and students will be expected to watch these lectures before meeting physically in class for a Question & Answer (Q&A) session based on the recorded lectures. Furthermore, since few students may not be physically in Aarhus before the start of the semester, the current plan is to livestream (most likely through Zoom), the live, in class and face-to-face sessions so that they can follow what is going on. The second part is largely practical and focuses on training students on how to produce among others, digital news reports (e.g mobile video journalism). Classes for this part will be a mixture of lectures, group assignments and practical workshops on digital news production. Students will be expected to use the knowledge obtained from the first part of the course to engage critically and reflectively with the practical aspects of producing different types of digital journalism.
